Planning a Kenya Trip for Diaspora Family and Visitors

A trip home can quickly become a complicated project. There may be international flights, family visits, hotels, airport transfers, upcountry journeys, coastal holidays and a safari—all within a limited number of days.

For diaspora travellers and relatives organising visits on their behalf, the best approach is to build one practical itinerary before paying for disconnected bookings.

Start with the fixed dates

Identify the international arrival and departure dates, family events, meetings and ceremonies that cannot move. Build flexible leisure plans around them.

Allow realistic time after a long flight. Scheduling an immediate road journey or packed programme may be exhausting, especially for children and older travellers.

Decide where accommodation is necessary

Even when staying with relatives, a hotel may be useful for the first night, a Nairobi stopover or part of the holiday. Consider:

  • Hotels near JKIA for late arrivals
  • Westlands accommodation for business and city access
  • Serviced apartments for longer family stays
  • Coast hotels for holidays
  • Safari camps and lodges

Share the number of travellers, children’s ages and room configuration before requesting rates.

Arrange airport collection in advance

Provide flight details and luggage information to the transfer provider. If relatives are being collected on your behalf, share the confirmed driver and meeting instructions with everyone involved.

Avoid relying on last-minute messages sent while the passenger is already in transit.

Combine family time with a Kenya experience

Visitors may want to add the Maasai Mara, Amboseli, Nairobi National Park, Naivasha, Mombasa or Diani. A short, well-planned experience is often better than an overloaded itinerary covering too many destinations.

Factor in the distance between places and whether road, flight or SGR travel is most suitable.

Review insurance before travelling

Travellers should understand their medical protection in Kenya and consider appropriate travel insurance. Check eligibility, geographical scope, emergency assistance, exclusions and any conditions concerning existing medical issues.

Do not assume a foreign health plan automatically covers every treatment or activity in Kenya.

Use one Kenyan point of contact

MyKava provides a Westlands-based travel and insurance desk for flights, hotels, airport transfers, SGR travel, safaris and travel insurance. A local contact can help coordinate the different parts of the journey and communicate with travellers and family organisers.
