Good healthcare should not begin with panic at the hospital reception. It should begin earlier—with a plan that reflects your needs, your family and what you can realistically afford.
Afya Nafuu is an affordable medical insurance product underwritten by APA Insurance Limited. It allows eligible individuals and families to select medical benefits based on their preferred level of protection and budget.
Imana Insurance Agency Kenya Ltd, an insurance intermediary regulated by Kenya’s Insurance Regulatory Authority, is authorised to market and distribute insurance products from its underwriting partners. Imana helps customers understand Afya Nafuu, request quotations, complete applications and follow up on policy documents and claims notifications.
In simple terms: APA Insurance underwrites and issues the policy; Imana helps you understand and access it.
If you are comparing affordable health insurance in Westlands, Nairobi or anywhere in Kenya, this guide explains how Afya Nafuu works, who may apply, what to examine before buying and how to request a personalised quotation through Imana.

Afya Nafuu is a private medical insurance solution designed for eligible individuals and families. Its core inpatient benefit helps meet eligible hospitalisation expenses arising from illness or accident, subject to the selected limit, policy terms, provider panel, waiting periods, sub-limits and exclusions.
Depending on the current product structure and option selected, a customer may also add outpatient or other optional benefits shown in APA’s quotation and policy schedule.
Afya Nafuu is designed to give customers a choice rather than forcing every household into one fixed package. The applicant selects the desired benefits, submits personal and medical information, and receives an age-based quotation subject to APA Insurance’s underwriting requirements.
Afya Nafuu is underwritten by APA Insurance Limited. APA evaluates applications, determines eligibility, sets premiums and policy terms, issues the cover and assesses claims according to the policy documents and applicable law.
Imana Insurance Agency Kenya Ltd acts as the insurance intermediary. Imana does not replace the underwriter and does not make the insurer’s claims decision. Its role is to help the client navigate the process—from understanding benefits and collecting documents to quotation follow-up, policy placement, renewal support and claims notification.
That distinction protects the customer from confusion and makes responsibility clear throughout the insurance journey.
Medical bills rarely arrive politely. A sudden admission, emergency procedure or serious illness can disrupt a household’s finances within days. Afya Nafuu is intended to provide eligible customers with a more affordable route into private medical insurance.
The product may suit:
Affordability does not mean every medical expense is covered. A buyer should compare the premium alongside the benefits, provider panel, waiting periods, exclusions and sub-limits.
Afya Nafuu is purchased and priced on a per-person basis. Each insured member receives individual inpatient and outpatient benefit limits, while the premium is calculated according to that person’s age, selected benefits, health declaration and APA Insurance’s underwriting requirements.
When a family applies, each member is quoted separately. The premiums applicable to all selected members are then combined to determine the total payable amount.
For example, an applicant may choose:
The KSh 1 million inpatient limit is intended for eligible hospitalisation expenses. The KSh 100,000 outpatient limit applies to eligible treatment that does not require hospital admission. Access remains subject to the policy terms, provider network, waiting periods, sub-limits and exclusions.
Optional benefits that operate on a family basis, where offered, should be checked separately in the quotation and policy schedule.
The following examples demonstrate how the same benefit selection can apply across different ages. They do not represent fixed premiums or automatic acceptance.
A parent or legal guardian wants private medical protection for a five-year-old child. The selected benefits are:
The child receives individual benefit limits and an individual premium based on the applicable child age band. The parent completes the proposal and supplies the child’s birth certificate or notification and any other documents requested.
Even where several children are insured, each child is treated as an individual insured person under the per-person structure.
A 25-year-old professional in Westlands, Nairobi, wants an individual medical policy because there is no employer-sponsored scheme. The selected benefits are:
APA calculates the premium using the appropriate age band, selected benefits and disclosed medical information. The applicant’s quotation cannot safely be copied from someone older or younger because age and underwriting information affect the price.
A 48-year-old business owner selects:
The limits are the same as those selected by the 25-year-old, but the premium may differ because the applicants fall within different age bands. Any chronic condition, previous treatment or ongoing medication must be disclosed truthfully. APA may apply waiting periods, sub-limits, revised terms or additional underwriting requirements.
An eligible 70-year-old applicant requests:
The application remains subject to APA’s prevailing entry-age rules and underwriting requirements. A medical report, examination or further health information may be requested. The senior applicant’s premium will reflect the applicable age band and will ordinarily differ from premiums charged to younger members.
These four applicants have selected identical benefit limits, but they should not expect identical premiums. Benefits can be the same while age-based prices differ.
Consider a household consisting of two adults and two children. Each person selects KSh 1 million inpatient and KSh 100,000 outpatient cover.
Adult one receives individual limits of KSh 1 million inpatient and KSh 100,000 outpatient. Adult two receives the same individual limits. Each child also receives individual KSh 1 million inpatient and KSh 100,000 outpatient limits.
The four people do not ordinarily share one KSh 1 million inpatient limit. Each person has a separate limit, and the total family premium is obtained by adding the age-based premium applicable to each insured member.
This structure is important when comparing Afya Nafuu with products using shared family limits. A lower headline price may represent a different benefit structure, so comparisons must be made carefully.
Subject to the policy terms and selected option, inpatient benefits may include eligible expenses such as:
Some conditions and procedures may have specific sub-limits, waiting periods or exclusions. The benefit schedule issued with the quotation must be reviewed before purchase.
Outpatient cover helps pay for eligible treatment that does not require admission. Depending on the selected benefit and APA’s current terms, this may include consultations, diagnostic tests, prescribed medicine and other covered outpatient services.
The KSh 100,000 outpatient option in the examples is an annual limit for each insured person, not an unlimited account. Certain services may have their own sub-limits, referral rules, provider restrictions or pre-authorisation requirements.
Before buying, confirm:
APA’s published Afya Nafuu material has historically shown several inpatient options, including limits from KSh 100,000 up to KSh 1,000,000 per insured person.
Product terms evolve. The option available to a specific customer must be confirmed using APA’s current quotation, benefit schedule and policy wording. Imana will help the applicant identify the latest available limits instead of relying on an old online rate card or forwarded brochure.
APA’s current public product information describes Afya Nafuu as catering for a broad family age range, from a full-term baby born at 38 weeks to an adult aged up to 80 years. Older APA brochures have shown different entry ages, so the latest underwriting rules must be confirmed at the time of application.
Age eligibility does not guarantee acceptance. APA may request additional medical information or apply specific underwriting terms based on age, medical history and selected benefits.
When applying for a newborn or child, a parent or legal guardian must provide the required birth and identification documents.
Pre-existing and chronic conditions must be disclosed fully during the application. These may include diabetes, hypertension, asthma, cancer, heart conditions, previous surgery, ongoing treatment or medication.
Depending on APA’s current underwriting terms, such conditions may be:
Never omit medical information to obtain a cheaper or faster quotation. Material non-disclosure can lead to declined claims, revised terms or cancellation in accordance with the policy and applicable law.
Medical policies may apply waiting periods before certain illnesses, pre-existing conditions, maternity benefits or specialised treatments become eligible.
An accident may be treated differently from an illness, but the applicable policy wording controls the outcome. Ask Imana to explain the waiting periods shown in the quotation before paying the premium.
The right question is not only, “When does the policy start?” It is also, “When does each benefit become available?”
Maternity should not be assumed to form part of the core inpatient benefit. Where available, it may be an optional benefit with separate limits, eligibility conditions and waiting periods.
Anyone planning for pregnancy should request the maternity terms before inception. Buying cover after pregnancy has begun does not automatically make the pregnancy eligible.
Access depends on APA’s applicable Afya Nafuu provider panel and the selected plan. Not every hospital or clinic in Kenya is automatically available under every medical product.
Before purchasing, check whether the preferred hospital is included and whether access is:
Provider panels can change. Request the current panel rather than relying on an old screenshot or social-media list.
There is no responsible single price for every applicant because Afya Nafuu is priced per person. The premium depends on factors such as:
A child, a 25-year-old, a 48-year-old and a 70-year-old may select the same KSh 1 million inpatient and KSh 100,000 outpatient limits but receive different premiums.
For an accurate amount, submit the ages and desired limits for every person who needs cover. Imana will prepare or obtain the appropriate quotation using the latest APA terms.
Request your personalised Afya Nafuu quotation.
Applicants may be asked to provide:
APA may request additional documents before accepting the risk.
Provide the name, date of birth or age and relationship of every person requiring cover.
Choose the preferred inpatient limit and indicate whether outpatient, maternity or other available benefits are required.
Imana coordinates the quotation using APA’s current age bands, benefits and underwriting requirements.
Compare the premium with the benefits, waiting periods, provider panel, sub-limits, exclusions and co-payments.
Submit the proposal form and required identification or medical documents. Answer every medical question accurately.
Cover begins only after APA accepts the application, all requirements are satisfied, the premium is paid and valid policy documentation confirms inception.
Medical insurance contains details that are easy to miss. A low premium can look attractive until a customer discovers an unexpected waiting period, provider restriction or sub-limit.
Imana helps clients:

Afya Nafuu is underwritten by APA Insurance Limited. Imana Insurance Agency Kenya Ltd is an insurance intermediary authorised to market and distribute products from its underwriting partners and assist customers through the application and policy-support journey.
The inpatient and outpatient cover is purchased and priced per insured person. Each member receives individual limits, while the total premium for a family is calculated by adding the age-based premiums for all selected members. Any optional benefit operating on a family basis should be checked separately.
Child-only applications may be considered subject to APA’s current eligibility and underwriting rules. A parent or guardian must complete the application and submit the required child documents.
Eligible older applicants may apply within APA’s prevailing entry-age limits. Medical reports, examinations or additional underwriting requirements may apply.
Pre-existing and chronic conditions may be subject to disclosure, waiting periods, sub-limits, exclusions or other underwriting terms. The quotation and policy documents must be reviewed for the individual applicant.
The available benefit combinations should be confirmed in the current quotation. Where outpatient cover is optional, a customer may be able to purchase inpatient-only cover or add an outpatient limit based on need and budget.
Maternity should not be assumed to be included automatically. Where offered, it may have a separate limit, waiting period and conditions.
No medical product should be assumed to work at every facility. Members access providers within the applicable APA panel and according to the plan’s authorisation, co-payment and reimbursement rules.
Yes. Applicants can send quotation information and supporting documents digitally through Imana. Policy commencement remains subject to APA’s acceptance, payment and issuance requirements.
Use the contact and pre-authorisation channels provided in the policy documents. For support, contact Imana promptly and provide the membership details, provider information, diagnosis or treatment request and any documents required by APA.
Choosing medical insurance should feel like building a safety net, not walking through a maze. Imana helps turn the fine print into practical choices: who needs cover, which limits fit, what each person will pay and what conditions apply before the first hospital visit.

Afya Nafuu brings medical cover within reach of children, young adults, working families and eligible seniors—but the right decision lives in the details.
Choose the benefits per person. Compare the age-based premium. Confirm the hospitals. Understand the waiting periods. Disclose medical history honestly. Then let the policy become what insurance should be: quiet preparation standing between a family and an unexpected bill.
