How much does medical insurance cost in Kenya? Can you use it immediately? Does it cover maternity, diabetes, cancer or treatment at your preferred hospital?
The answer depends on the medical plan you choose. Your benefits, hospital network, waiting periods, exclusions and payment terms determine what the insurer will pay.
This guide answers 50 questions to help individuals, families and employers compare medical insurance in Kenya.
Explore Imana’s health insurance options or request a medical insurance quotation.
Medical insurance pays for eligible healthcare expenses under an agreed policy. Depending on the plan, it may cover hospital admissions, consultations, tests, prescribed medication and other benefits. Payment remains subject to the policy’s limits, conditions and exclusions.
The terms are often used interchangeably. What matters is the actual product. A hospital cash plan, clinic membership and medical expenses policy can provide different protection. Ask whether the product pays eligible treatment bills or a fixed cash benefit.
Options include individual, family, children’s, senior, SME and corporate medical plans. Some provide inpatient cover only; others include outpatient and additional benefits. Jubilee’s published health FAQs describe separate products for these customer groups.
Inpatient cover generally pays eligible expenses associated with hospital admission, such as accommodation, surgery and treatment. Check the admission definition, room entitlement and benefit limits. Day procedures may have separate rules and should not be assumed excluded simply because there is no overnight stay.
Outpatient cover generally pays eligible consultations, diagnostic tests and prescribed medication when you are not admitted. Specialist visits and other services depend on the plan. AAR lists outpatient as an optional addition to its retail inpatient plans.
Yes, some products offer inpatient-only protection. This can reduce the premium, but routine consultations and medication may remain your responsibility. Compare the saving against your expected outpatient needs. Jubilee lists CoverBora as an inpatient-only option. Imana can assist you compare.
Not across every insurer or plan. Benefits may be included, optional, or unavailable. AAR includes maternity in its retail inpatient plans and dental and optical when outpatient is selected. Jubilee’s arrangements differ by product. References: AAR benefits, Jubilee benefit options
The best plan fits your household, budget, preferred hospitals and healthcare needs. Compare waiting periods, exclusions, chronic-condition terms and member contributions alongside price. A high headline limit is less useful if the treatment you need has a much smaller sub-limit.
“Microhealth” commonly describes products designed for smaller budgets or particular groups. The name alone does not explain the protection. Ask who underwrites the plan, which services it provides, where you can receive treatment, and whether benefits are cash payments or treatment expenses.
Hospital cash insurance pays a defined benefit when a qualifying admission occurs. It does not necessarily settle the hospital bill. Britam describes HospiCash as an income-replacement product linked to admission. Check daily benefits, qualifying days and exclusions. Reference: Britam product overview
There is no single price. Premiums can depend on ages, family size, benefits, hospital access and underwriting terms. Request a quotation based on your household and preferred cover. Confirm whether the quoted amount is annual, monthly, or for a shorter cover period.
Jubilee’s health FAQ document, published in its July 2025 folder, lists CoverBora starting at KSh 6,200 annually for individuals and KSh 11,200 for families.
These are published starting prices checked on 6 October 2026, not a personalised quotation or confirmation of today’s eligibility and terms. Ask for a current benefit schedule and price. Reference: Jubilee published pricing
A lower premium may reflect different benefits, hospital access, shared limits, co-payments or exclusions. Compare equivalent cover rather than price alone. Ask what you would pay yourself during a consultation, admission or treatment for a pre-existing condition.
Prepare the ages and number of people to cover, your budget, preferred hospitals, desired inpatient limit and additional benefits. Imana’s quotation form asks about family size, benefit choices, preferred limits and start date. Request a health quotation
Requirements vary. They may include an ID or passport, KRA PIN, children’s birth certificates and completed application forms. Business cover may require registration documents. Jubilee lists these among its enrolment requirements. Reference: Jubilee enrolment information
Complete the insurer’s medical questions accurately, including relevant diagnoses, medication and treatment history. Ask for help if a question is unclear. Do not assume a condition is accepted simply because the application has been submitted. Obtain the insurer’s terms in writing.
Ask whether instalments or financing are available for the selected plan. Confirm the total cost, payment dates and effect of missed payments. Do not assume a monthly payment arrangement gives the same cover period or conditions as an annual policy.
Start with your preferred hospitals and essential benefits. Compare inpatient-only and combined options, then consider co-payments and family-shared limits. Request a clear explanation of what you give up when choosing a cheaper plan.
It is the maximum payable for a specified benefit during the policy year, subject to the policy’s conditions. Inpatient and outpatient benefits may have separate limits. Ask whether the amount applies to each member or is shared by the family.
A sub-limit is a smaller cap within a broader benefit. Maternity, chronic conditions or diagnostic services may have separate caps. Britam’s published Bima ya Mwananchi brochure shows chronic and psychiatric sub-limits within wider benefits. Reference: Britam benefit structure
A family-shared limit is used by eligible family members collectively. Per-person cover assigns a separate limit to each member. AAR offers both structures. Compare how a large claim by one member would affect the remaining family protection. Reference: AAR family cover options
A co-payment is your required contribution towards an eligible service. It may be fixed or percentage-based.
Illustration dated 6 October 2026: If an eligible bill is KSh 5,000 and your co-payment is 10%, your contribution is KSh 500, assuming no other restrictions apply. This is not a quoted plan benefit.
Read Imana’s explanation of medical insurance terms.
It is the period after the relevant cover starts during which a specified benefit is not yet available. Waiting periods can differ between general illness, maternity and pre-existing conditions. Check each benefit separately. Reference: Jubilee waiting-period guide
Sometimes certain benefits start immediately, while others have waiting periods. Payment, policy activation and benefit eligibility are separate matters. Obtain written confirmation of your start date and applicable waiting periods before relying on the cover.
Some plans cover qualifying accidental treatment from commencement. Britam’s published Bima ya Mwananchi brochure states this, while applying waiting periods to illness. This is a product example, not a universal rule. Reference: Britam waiting periods
Ask the receiving insurer whether previous continuous cover qualifies for a waiver. Provide the documents it requests and obtain written acceptance. Do not cancel your existing policy based on an assumed waiver or assume enhanced benefits qualify automatically.
Some plans include maternity; others require an additional benefit. Confirm delivery limits, antenatal and postnatal benefits, complications and waiting periods. Having inpatient cover alone does not establish that every pregnancy-related expense is covered.
It depends on the product. Jubilee’s waiting-period guide gives 9–12 months as a typical example. Your selected policy may differ. Confirm when the waiting period begins and how it applies to the expected delivery date. Reference: Jubilee maternity waiting periods
Disclose the pregnancy and request a written assessment of available options. A new policy’s waiting period may prevent payment for the current pregnancy. Group schemes and other arrangements may have different terms. Do not assume either automatic acceptance or universal exclusion.
They may be, but separate limits or conditions can apply. Jubilee lists both within its maternity offerings. Ask whether antenatal care, complications and newborn treatment use the same benefit or separate limits. Reference: Jubilee maternity benefits
Check the enrolment deadline, required documents, additional premium and effective date. Newborn care under a maternity benefit is not necessarily the same as adding a child to the policy. Obtain confirmation that the baby is included.
Dedicated children’s medical products are available. Britam offers Milele Junior, and Jubilee lists J Junior. Confirm entry age, guardian requirements, benefits and exclusions for the chosen product. References: Britam child cover, Jubilee child options
Yes, insurers offer senior products, but eligibility and terms differ. Jubilee describes J-Senior for people aged 65 and above. Ask about entry and renewal ages, chronic conditions, co-payments and hospital access. Reference: Jubilee senior cover
It is a condition that falls within the insurer’s definition of having existed before the relevant cover began. Definitions may include previous symptoms, advice, diagnosis or treatment. Ask how the policy defines it and disclose the information requested.
Some plans cover chronic conditions subject to acceptance, waiting periods and sub-limits. Check consultations, monitoring tests, medication and admissions separately. Britam’s Milele plans show different chronic-condition terms by plan level. Reference: Britam chronic-condition benefits
Some plans include cancer benefits, but limits and waiting periods vary. Ask about diagnosis, surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and medication, including exclusions for particular treatments. Britam identifies cancer within its plan-specific condition benefits. Reference: Britam medical benefit options
Some plans include counselling, therapy or inpatient psychiatric care. These benefits are not identical across products. Britam’s Milele page shows different mental-health and rehabilitation terms by plan. Reference: Britam mental-health benefits
Check whether dental and optical benefits are selected and what they include. Limits may apply to procedures, lenses, frames or replacement frequency. Jubilee’s retail brochure provides product-specific dental and optical benefits. Reference: Jubilee retail benefits brochure
Only where the benefit allows them. Preventive care is not automatically treated like illness-related care. Check eligible services, frequency and approved providers. Jubilee describes child check-ups and vaccinations among its child-cover offerings. Reference: Jubilee child benefits
Exclusions vary. A product may exclude cosmetic procedures, fertility treatment, supplements or other specified services. Jubilee’s J-Care Junior brochure gives examples of exclusions. Read the full list for your chosen policy. Reference: J-Care Junior exclusions
Do not assume so. Check the current provider list for your exact plan, including the hospital branch and service required. Britam’s Milele plans show different hospital access by tier. Reference: Britam hospital access
Pre-authorisation is the insurer’s approval process for specified treatment or admissions. It may be required before planned services. Ask the hospital and insurer who submits the request and what documents are needed. Approval remains subject to the policy and authorised scope.
Seek urgent care and notify the insurer’s emergency assistance team as soon as practical. Ask about emergency notification deadlines and treatment outside the network. Do not assume every out-of-network bill will be reimbursed simply because the situation was urgent.
SHA administers Kenya’s public social health arrangements. Private medical insurance is a separate contract with its own benefits and conditions. Compare your eligible SHA services with a proposed private plan rather than assuming they provide identical cover.
Ask the hospital and insurer how benefits are coordinated for your case. The treatment, eligibility, billing rules and private policy terms matter. Do not assume both will pay the full bill or that any shortfall is automatically covered.
Some plans provide regional treatment, overseas referrals or emergency benefits abroad. Check destinations, approval requirements, duration and limits. Jubilee describes overseas benefits on selected plans. Routine local cover should not be assumed to provide worldwide treatment. Reference: Jubilee overseas benefits
For direct billing, use the approved provider and follow identification and authorisation rules. For reimbursement, confirm eligibility and submit the required form, receipts and medical documents within the deadline. Paying yourself does not guarantee reimbursement. Reference: Britam medical claims process
Requirements can include an itemised bill, receipts, prescription, completed claim form and discharge summary for admission. Britam’s published claims page specifies receipt of fully documented claims within 45 days of treatment. Confirm your own insurer’s deadline. Reference: Britam reimbursement requirements
Review the renewal premium, benefits, provider list, exclusions and remaining eligibility before expiry. Ask whether upgrades introduce waiting periods or underwriting requirements. Obtain the new schedule and avoid assuming last year’s price or benefits continue unchanged.
Yes, group products are available, subject to eligibility and minimum membership requirements. Compare employee and dependant benefits, joining rules and treatment networks. Jubilee lists SME, SACCO, chama and welfare-group options. Reference: Jubilee business and group cover
Choose medical cover by comparing what it provides when you need treatment.
